J/122 offshore, cruising, racing, one-design sailboat- sailing off Newport

J/122 Best 41' Record In 2010

(Newport, RI)- FLYING JENNY VI she was.  And flying on WINGS and a prayer she was, too.  And while SKYE was not to be denied, nor was the noble and famous CHRISTOPHER DRAGON taking off into wild blue yonder without collecting some gold and silverware along the way, too. Are TEAMWORK and PARTNERSHIP emblematic of teams like the Yankees and Red Sox knocking it out of the park? PUGWASH applying Einstein-like out-of-the-box thinking and cleaning house?  What's the common denominator?  All J/122s sailing in the summer of 2010...continuing to win in all conditions, all weather, from fully crewed teams to double-handed pioneers.  Let the force be with you.  Can something so comfortable, elegant and gorgeous really win that much? You can count on it.

J/122 racing, cruising, offshore sailboat- winning IRC sailingCollectively, some of these J/122s sailed their one-design North Americans together, won by the WINGS gang. FJ VI won the Great Lakes IRC Champs, the Bayview-Mac, the Chicago-Mac and the Harbor Springs Regatta- not just the magic "three-peat" some Chicago basketball player once announced, but the more incredible "four-peat" all in one season!  PUGWASH walked off with class wins in the Astor Cup and Queens Cup as well as Squadron Runs in the fabled New York YC's Annual Cruise in Maine.  TEAMWORK sprinted away with the Ft. Lauderdale-Key West Race.  PARTNERSHIP blew away all competitors in the Stamford-Vineyard Race.  CHRIS DRAGON simply dominated the US IRC National Championship in her class.  Not to be outdone by FJ VI, the remarkable SKYE walked off with a three-peat of the Chicago-Mac Race, this year as Double-Handed Overall Winners- a feat unequalled by ANY boat EVER in the history of this most infamous race covering the length of Lake Michigan.  For more information on sailing the luxurious J/122.

The Longstanding Tradition Is Alive and Thriving!
Whether it’s One Design, PHRF or IRC, J/Boats entries are always big news at Key West Race Week. J/105s and J/80s turn out in strong numbers and the competition is outstanding. It’s not unusual to have a J/Boat winning Boat of the Day, Boat of the Week, and/or PHRF Boat of the Week.  2011 will be no exception and looks to be another banner year. J/80s are well on their way to a 20-boat class at this early date. With four J/95s already committing, there will likely be separate sub-class scoring and trophies.

Keep up with the plans and projections on class pages on the event web site: for the J/80s click here, for the J/105s click here.   Premiere Racing updates each class’ special page with entry news and class specific planning details.

Plan to escape the chill of winter and head to Key West in January. Race dates are January 17 – 21, 2011. Take advantage of the early entry discount ($100 off paid entries submitted by October 1), and other savings on the social fees, and the Truman Waterfront Property (Navy Basin). We’ll look forward to seeing you there! J/Boats has been a Key West Industry Partner since the beginning of the program in 2002.  For more Key West Race Week sailing information.

J/Regatta News

The Sun Never Sets on J's Sailing Worldwide

With the fall season nearly around the corner, the weather changes begin to accelerate, cold fronts tend to move a lot faster and the ocassional hurricane makes its presence known along America's eastern seaboard-- often throwing a monkey wrench into the best laid plans for regattas and offshore races.  In the case of last week, a real hurricane called "Earl" managed to disrupt a few events along its trip up the US East Coast.  The renowned Stamford-Vineyard Race was postponed from a Friday evening start to a Saturday morning start.  Annapolis Race Week had to exercise some precautions in case the Chesapeake Bay experienced unusually high waters-- the tides were ferocious.  Meanwhile, J/80 sailors were prepping for both their J/80 North Americans and Worlds this fall.  The J/111 sailed both the Chicago TriState Race and the Jamestown Around Island Race- more news on the results next week!  Read on! More importantly, if you have more J/Regatta News, please email it or upload onto our J/Boats Facebook page!  Below are the summaries. Don't forget to visit the J/Cruising Community section below.

J/122 one-design offshore racing cruising sailboatJ/122 Repeats Stamford-Vineyard Race
PARTNERSHIP Flies In Big Seas/ Big Breeze
(Stamford, CT)- The 76th running of the Vineyard Race historically takes place on Labor Day weekend. It is a classic American yachting event hosted by Stamford Yacht Club (Stamford, CT), taking the fleet on a 238-mile course stretching through Long Island Sound, past Block Island, and on to the light tower at the entrance to Buzzard's Bay before returning to the finish in Stamford Harbor. Interest in the 2010 race was high, with 85 entries confirmed, way up from 50 entries two years ago.

And then came Hurricane Earl with reports of 50 foot seas offshore, Category 3 status with winds up to 150 mph, enormous storm surge due to its 940 mb low pressure and hitting the Northeast coast at high tide.  It all sounded a bit like a Hollywood death and destruction movie rolling up the eastern seaboard, mayhem and chaos left spinning in its wake.  As a result, the Race Committee studied the weather projections and by late Wednesday postponed the Friday noon start until 10:00 on Saturday.  It was a good move.  By the early hours of Saturday the storm was over Nova Scotia going out to sea.
The 2010 Vineyard Race provided serious thrills this year, with big seas and breeze in the 20 to 30+ kt range. J/Boats dominated the winner’s circle, with first place finishes in 5 divisions, including PHRF-3, IRC-Doublehanded, IRC-30, IRC-40 and IRC-45.
In the IRC-30 Class John Towers sailed his J/37 RIPPLE to a class a win and commented that the boat “performed better than I would have ever imagined.  She was able to handle winds up to 37 knots with the spinnaker up. Our speed downwind was routinely in the 10-13 knot range and exceeded 17 knots on one wave. The win was particularly enjoyable because the crew is such a great group of guys who get along quite well.”  Just behind him in third overall was Mark Perry and Lawrence McGrath sailing their J/35 BLUE MOUSE.
In the IRC-35 Class, Jeff Warren's J/109 ARIEL sailed the course well, stayed out of trouble and managed to get a fifth in class.

In the IRC-40 class, J’s took the first 3 positions, with David and Mary-Ellen Tortorello's J/122 PARTNERSHIP in first place- repeating their win the previous year.  The victory for the 122 proves again how successful a design the 122 can be in IRC racing. The 122 also beat most of the next division (IRC-45, starting 10 minutes later) across the line boat-for-boat! We’re happy to see the J/122 flourishing as both a one design class and an extremely competitive boat in IRC-40.  Other J's did well in the same class, Joe Healey's J/120 SOULMATE finished second and Rick Oricchio's J/120 ROCKET SCIENCE getting a third, rounding out a clean sweep for J's in the IRC-40 class.  George Shaws' J/122 TUMBLEWEED finished fifth.

For the IRC-45 class, Len Sitar's J/44 VAMP simply walked away from their competition to win their class quite handily. Tom Carroll's J/133 SIREN SONG hung in to get a respectable fifth place.

J/35 offshore racing cruising sailboat- sailing upwind across the BayIn the IRC Double-handed division, the J/35 PALADIN raced by Jason Richter continued their winning ways after winning the Double-handed division in this year's Bermuda Race.  Not surprising that this robust classic sailboat could take on the big seas and big breeze both upwind and downwind and prevail over their competitors.  Hewitt Gaynor's J/120 MIREILLE sailed a strong race to get third overall in this division.  Andrew Berdon's J/109 STRIDER also had a good race, finishing fourth.

David Spence's J/105 SYNERGY sailed the Seaflower Reef Course in PHRF 2 and placed second.

Finally, Todd Aven's J/92 THIN MAN prevailed on the Cornfield Point course, repeating their 2008 win in that division. Not only were they able to prevail in challenging conditions, but they got some great onboard video along the way!  For more Stamford-Vineyard Race sailing information  For some fun, you might enjoy watching the J/92s Stamford Vineyard Race YouTube video.

J/30 one-design cruising racing sailboat- sailing under spinnaker at Annapolis Race WeekAnnapolis Race Week a J/Fest!
RUM PUPPY Wins J/105s
(Annapolis, MD)-  Annapolis Race Week has been held on the Chesapeake Bay over Labor Day weekend for more than four decades. Organized by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, the popular three-day regatta has become a local tradition - albeit solely within the local sailing community. “People around Annapolis that didn’t own a sailboat or weren’t competing had no idea when Annapolis Race Week was held or what it was all about,” said Bobby Frey, former CBYRA president and on-water regatta chairman.

CBYRA officials believe the 44th annual Annapolis Race Week will greatly increase awareness among average Annapolitans that a major sailing event is being held in their midst. Headquarters for Annapolis Race Week have been moved to City Dock and that increased visibility should benefit both the city and the regatta. “For the first time in its history, Annapolis Race Week is really going to be part of Annapolis,” Frey said. “If you go to the race weeks in Key West and Charleston, the city is a big part of the charm. I think this move has the potential to be a really positive thing for both the city of Annapolis and CBYRA.”
Annapolis Race Week has always been a top-notch operation on the water and this year will be no different with upwards of 160 boats expected to compete in 18 classes. There was tremendous participation from the J contingent with solid turnouts from the J/105, J/80, J/24, J/35 and J/30 fleets!  Nearly half the fleet!

J/105 one-design sailboat- sailing under spinnaker at Annapolis Race WeekIn the fifteen boat J/105 fleet, Jack Biddle's RUM PUPPY simply took off and seemingly never looked back, rattling off a 1-2-1-4-1-2-3 series to win by 11 points over the second place team of Carl and Scott Gitchell sailing TENACIOUS.   Third was Chris and Carolyn Groobey's JAVA just five points back.  Seems that a bit of practice aboard the J/100 TERN in the Downeast Race Week cruise helped Chris' speed on downwind gybing angles!

The J/35s had a great turnout with twelves boats from all over Chesapeake Bay.  Bill Wildner's MR BILL'S WILD RIDE also dominated their class, winning a few too many races and getting a fantastic record of 3-1-4-1-1-1-1 to win by 16 points!  Ouch, hurts to get spanked soooo bad!  In second was Peter Scheidt on MAGGIE and in third was Charles Kohlerman on MEDICINE MAN.

The J/80s were in great competitive form amongst their seventeen boat fleet.  A number of teams attending the J/80 North Americans in Buzzards Bay and also headed to the J/80 Worlds were using it as a tune-up regatta.  Ultimately, Allen Terhune on 221 won by an astonishing 25 points over his fellow competitors!  A sign of things to come in the NA's and Worlds?  We wonder.  Allen had seven firsts and a fifth.  OMG, perhaps this was a worse spanking than competitors received in the J/35 class?  Lessons learned perhaps for some.  Lying in a tie for second was Dan Witting on EMOTIONAL RESCUE and John White on 1162, with the tie broken in favor of EMOTIONAL RESCUE.

The seven boat J/24 fleet was incredibly competitive amongst the top three.  Just two points separated all of them at the conclusion of the regatta.  Just squeezing ahead of the cluster was Pete Kassal on SPACEMAN SPIFF, second was MILLENIUM FALCON and third was Brent Ellwood's SANE ASYLUM.

Incredibly (and kudos to them all), the J/30 class had a fantastic turnout with nine boats going for the gold.  Gotta love these passionate owners having a ball with "son of J/24" (the J/30 was the 2nd boat J/Boats ever built).  So many of these boats have been reconditioned, many of them look nearly new!  Bob Rutsch and Mike Costello on BEPOP bopped everyone over their heads and took the gold with four firsts in their score, winning by ten points.  The battle for second was going to the final heat between four boats and the last two races proved to be a topsy-turvy affair.  Falling just shy of throwing it all away and hanging in there by their chinny-chin-chin was Larry Christy's BIG KAHUNA team getting second with a thundering 6-5 for their last two races.  Yikes.  Breathing down their necks were Ron Anderson sailing INSATIABLE, Bob Putnam skippering BETTER MOUSETRAP and George Watson racing AVITA, finishing 3rd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.  For more Annapolis Race Week sailing results.

What friends, alumni and crew of J/Boats are doing worldwide

* If you recall, last week Rives Allen from Panama City, FL was sharing his experience having fun on a refurbished (a.k.a. "monster garage" recontructed) J/29 called SUPER DUCK.  Well, we asked for some pictures of this "phoenix arising from the ashes" and Rives was kind enough to forward some along.  Here's a great shot of his boat enjoying the sunny northwestern coast of Florida.

Rick Deppe- PUMA and Volvo videographer * Back in 1990 in Cowes/ Lymington, England, a very nice young gentleman from the British Midlands by the name of Rick Deppe asked if he could help Stu Johnstone captain his J/44 J-HAWK and J/35 JAILBIRD (sailed by Eddie Warden-Owen who was then at Banks Sails).  Stuart at the time was starting J/Boats Europe, based in Lymington just off the High Street in Trafalgar Square.  One thing led to another, Ricky married an American gal and lived in the Washington, DC area.  He got a job with Discovery Channel as a videographer for that insane show called "Deadliest Catch"-- e.g. documenting Alaska King-crabbers doing their job in the Gulf of Alaska.  Now, Ricky is joining the Volvo Ocean Race HQ- Rick Deppe will have a hand in production and will work with the onboard media crew both before and throughout the 9-month odyssey, helping the new on-board multimedia/ photo journalists do the best job possible in the tough conditions for which the Volvo Ocean Race is renowned.  Rick's inspiring career as both professional sailor and filmmaker will stand him in good stead for his new role, and the lessons he learned as media crew for PUMA on the last race will be particularly useful.

Rick knows just how hard it is being on these powerful boats and how hard it is to work on them as a cameraman. "It's a very difficult environment to be a cameraman, when you're being tipped over, bouncing, trying to film with the wind noise and water flying everywhere," he recalled. "The rules to being a cameraman normally are 'always get a steady shot', 'always keep your lenses clean', 'get great audio', and all the other basic rules. But they all have to go out the window, when you get on a Volvo Open 70."

Before getting onboard with PUMA as their on-board multimedia/journalist in 2008-09, Deppe had worked on several filming projects for Discovery Channel like "Deadliest Catch" and later for Roy Disney on his film project "Morning Light".  Ricky already had years of experience as an offshore sailor including several round-the-world races, sailing as a bowman on Fortuna in the 1993-94 Whitbread and on Chessie Racing in the 1997-98 race.

At the end of the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race, Deppe was awarded the Inmarsat Media Prize for his excellent filmwork on ill mostro.  Rick's experience will be perfect to train the MCM's before the race and to help them understand they obstacles the will encounter during their epic journey.  Ultimately, you can read more about Ricky's influence on bringing the Volvo Ocean Race to your living room couch- read more here.
