The Sun Never Sets on J's Sailing Worldwide
As usual, the end of August and the start of September brings a bit of a breather on the international sailing circuits, particularly in the northern hemisphere. Vacations are ending, time to get back to work after all that fun in the sun and, oh yes, those kids need to get back into school so they can ultimately earn their keep in the future. Nevertheless, a number of interesting events took place, some with deep meaning and motivation, others just for fun. The Sarcoma Cup on San Francisco Bay provided both an outlet for fun, but one of meaningful support to help those "beat sarcoma". On the for fun side, the J/80s in France and Denmark had great turnouts for their Pornic J Cup and Nationals, respectively. The Canadians are growing their J/80 class, see the Community section below. Finally, many New Englanders hopped into their boats to sail a light-air PHRF New Englands on Mass Bay, including the J/105s sailing their New England Championship. Read on! PHRF & J/105 New Englands
DeNapoli Breezes to J/105 Win
(Marblehead, MA)- The PHRF New England Championships is one of New England's premiere sailing competitions and one of the largest, offshore East Coast sailing events of the entire 2010 season. More than 1,200 sailors gathered in Marblehead to race on three courses for the three-day regatta. J's were well represented on each course, with a large class of 22 J/105s on one course and J/30s, J/100s, J/109s, a J/120 and J/130 spread across the fleet.
Like last year's event, the fleet was greeted on Friday with a NNW breeze in the morning that had all the promise of lasting all day. However, as those who've sailed in Marblehead's capricious waters over the years know all too well, it was an unlikely prospect to happen. The first two races were sailed in very shifty, very streaky winds and it appeared many boats had theories on how to get around the race track better, as groups of boats would simply hit a corner--- hard. By the third race, it was obvious the northerly would die, flip-flopping entire fleets front to back and again at least once. Saturday's sailing was a more "normal" day for Marblehead as the southerly sea breeze developed quickly and behaved a bit erratically, even for die-hard Marblehead cynics. By Sunday, the PRO's on all course were wishing to get in at least one race in the uncharacteristically light and spotty southerly sea breeze, most did. Some smart guys resorted to new technology- cool boom tents called "Tent-O" (seen here)-- more news about these amazing gadgets later.
The large J/105 one-design class were sailing their New England Championship. The veterans hung in there and the top three leaders managed to find a few good corners on the race course and dug themselves out of other bad legs more than once. Leading the pack was Fred DeNapoli's ALLEGRO SEMPLICITA with a remarkably consistent score of 1-1-9-3-4-4 for 12.5 points. After Saturday it was clear Fred and gang must've had their lucky Mardi Gras beads on as they simply could not make a big mistake, unlike the rest of the fleet. A group of five boats were vying for second place and after the smoke cleared, it was Matt Pike's GOT QI that wrestled themselves into 2nd place followed by Peter Morgan's STEEL AWAY in third, Mike Royer's BLOWN AWAY in fourth and the Brauer/Neff team aboard SCIMITAR in fifth.In the handicap world, Bob Cunningham's J/30 RUFFIAN finished second in Class CR2 with a strong 3-1-1-3-2 record, just one point out of first!
In Class R4, second was the J/100 MOOSE DROOL sailed by Adam Saidla to a 6-1-1-1-3 score, losing first place by just 0.5 points! Just off the pace in 5th was the J/33 SCIROCCO well-sailed by Ward and Liz Blodgett.
For the "Day" Class Boat fleet, there were a smattering of J/100s. Finishing 4th was the J/100 GIGI skippered by Tom Mager with a very consistent 5-5-5 score. In 5th was the J/100 REDWING sailed by David McCue with a 4-4-11 record, just four points back. In 7th was Ed Kaye's J/100 and in 10th was George Putnam's J/100 LARUS.There was a gorgeous J/30 sailing in Class R5. Homa and Buxton's J/30 EVELYN looked completely reconditioned. It is a beautifully refinished boat with a pretty grey-blue polyurethane gloss on their topsides.
In Class R3, there were some nicely sailed J/109s, led home by Gary Weisberg on HEATWAVE. Gary's team started out solidly with a 2-1 but then had trouble on the shiftier, streakier days to get a 6-3 to close out the series. The J/109 SUPERSTITION sailed by Chris Zibailo was fourth and in sixth was Mike Feeley's LADY LOVE. 7th was the J/35 DIE FLEDERMAUS sailed by Ty Janney.
In the "big boat" Class R2, the J/130 SAGA skippered by Kris Kristiansen took third place with a 4-3-5-1 and just missing second by 1.8 points. Behind them in sixth was Seamus Hourihan's J/120 RUFFIAN. For more PHRF New Englands sailing information. Sailing photo credits- Blake Jackson
JAM SESSION Pounds Sarcoma Cup
(San Francisco, CA)- The Sarcoma Cup is an annual sailing regatta that benefits the non-profit BeatSarcoma, Inc., which raises money for Sarcoma research. This year's event was held in San Francisco's central bay (between Berkeley/Treasure Island/Angel Island). And, as anyone in the fleet could've hoped for, the fleet was treated to two classic "nuclear" days on the Bay-- clear skies, puffy white clouds, blowing dogs off chains, white caps everywhere.As one person observed for Latitude 38, "if you were out on the Bay this weekend, you know that someone turned on the fan. While Saturday's forecast was for a sedate 15-18 knots, if you were on the water after about 8:00 a.m., you know that it didn't take long for that prediction to prove short by about half. With sun and a relatively warm breeze that reached the low-30s near the Gate, it was a good day to tuck in a reef and wear just about every item of clothing you brought to the boat."
A venue change didn't hurt the third edition of the Sarcoma Cup, which drew an impressive fleet of boats to Berkeley YC. Split between six one design and two PHRF divisions, 67 boats showed up for Saturday's buoy racing. The J/105 fleet led the charge, drawing 19 boats. With the breeze a little lighter than the 30-plus knots seen in the slot closer to the Gate, there weren't a whole lot of letter scores in the results.After the boats hit the dock and the sailing gear was hung out to dry, it was time for the aprés sail. With a kegs and wine providing the lubricity, those who didn't end up in an ambulatory food coma after the dinner spread put out by the club hit the dance floor for some shake 'n bake to live music — and even a karaoke performance by a J/105 sailor who will go unnamed. There was a silent auction and chair massages for the weary, and probably more than a few bleary-eyed sailors who showed up for Sunday's pursuit race — the J/105s sailed another day of buoy racing.
Adam Spiegel's JAM SESSION took the J/105 division with an impressive score of 1-1-2-2-3 for nine points, well clear of Bruce Stone's ARBITRAGE in second with fourteen points. Third was Phil Laby and Richard Pipkin's RACER X, fourth Scooter Simmons on BLACKHAWK and fifth John Horsch sailing BUSINESS TIME. For more Sarcoma Cup Sailig information. Davidsen Wins J/80 Danish Nationals
(Copenhagen, Denmark)- In a competitive, multinational fleet, Ullman Sails' Jesper Davidsen and team of Jacob Jacobsen, Morten Davidsen and Michael Lauersen won the Danish J/80 Nationals in Copenhagen, August 14-15. Of the five races sailed, the team won four and dropped a second place to round out their final score. "We had very good upwind speed and won every duel we had. We always could choose between speed and point," Jesper said. For more Danish J/80 sailing news.
Chiron is Boss in J/80 Pornic J/Cup
(Pornic, France)- According to Paul Chiron, the Pornic J Cup is one of his favorite events. He did not disappoint, leading his J/80 JULES into contention and finishing all the races in the top 5- it was a consistent 2-3-2-4-5-3-4 record.27 J/80s were on the starting line and Club C.N. Pornic was a wonderful host for the event. The fleet was treated to a variety of wind and sea conditions over the three days-- light winds, flat seas Saturday and Sunday and Monday choppy waters with good breeze. The competitors sailed 8 races (6 windward-leewards and two coastal races).
Behind JULES was INTERFACE CONCEPT 2 skippered by Gildas Mahe, Emeritus Figaro sailor. Were it not for one bad race to count, Gildas and crew could have easily won the event, their record was a 1-5-14-3-1-6-1. Third was Ludovic Gilet's JACUZZI. Fourth was INTERFACE CONCEPT 1 sailed by Jean Charles Moriceau, a good regatta for this team that is currently doing well in Coupe de France rankings. What friends, alumni and crew of J/Boats are doing worldwide
* J Sailors Big In New York YC Invite Qualifiers - The New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup U.S. Qualifying Series, where 24 preeminent yacht clubs in America will compete, will be held in Newport, RI next week on September 7-11. The top three U.S. teams from next week's event will join the top six teams from the 2009 Invitational Cup. Among the competitors, who must be amateurs (Corinthian) sailors and members of the yacht clubs they represent, is Bora Gulari, skipper of the entry from Bayview Yacht Club, founded in 1915 in Detroit. Gulari is the 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year in America on the strength of his win in the Moth World Championship in 2009. “This is a great honor to be invited to compete. I’m very excited to race against other U.S. yacht clubs. This is like an amateur championship in the States. I hope to do well, but this is not my usual type of sailing," explained Gulari who sails a fast-singlehanded hydrofoil-equipped dinghy. "I look forward to representing my club Bayview and am going to give it an all-out effort." Bora is good friends with Frank Kern's gang on his J/120 CARINTHIA...after all, good sailors who have fun are a small crowd in "Day-twah".
The skipper for the team from Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Mass. is Bill Lynn (pictured above), who is no stranger to the Sonars and J/22s. Billy is the 2007 Sonar World Champion and 2004 North American titleholder. Eastern Yacht Club was founded in 1870 and fielded three successful defenders to the America’s Cup: Puritan, Mayflower and Volunteer in 1885, 1886 and 1887, respectively. Billy is a classmate of the Editor, an All-American, a great J sailor (J/22, J/24, J/105, etc) and will be a force to reckon with.
The St. Francis Yacht Club Team from San Francisco is skippered by Russ Silvestri, who sailed a Finn in the 2000 Olympics and competed in the 2009 NYYC Invitational Cup for this same yacht club team, which finished seventh. The St. Francis Yacht Club, founded in 1869, is the oldest yacht club on North America’s Pacific Coast and boasts a number of Olympic and America’s Cup sailors. Russ is a long-time J sailor and friend having raced amongst others the J/22, J/24, J/105-- and is using ex-J/24 North American Champion Ed Adams as his coach-- we're expecting big things from you guys!

* J/80 Canada Fleet Growing- Port Credit YC J/80 Challenge Cup- Larry Alexander and friends on the north shore of Lake Ontario (Hamilton to Toronto) have formed a small group that are diligently putting together a fleet of J/80s on Lake Ontario (perhaps a J/80 World's boat or two?).
As Larry describes, "..the reason I’m writing is we’re putting together a friendly match in September at Port Credit YC with the hopes to create some local knowledge and interest in J’s. The PCYC race committee chair has generously offered to run the series and our hope and desire is that J/80 owners (and potential owners) have some interest in helping get the word out and participating!"
Furthermore, Larry says, "So far we have contact with seven boats of which we believe we’ll be able to put together a race, and we’ve set up a hotmail account (j80lakeontario@hotmail.com) and a FaceBook group (J80 Lake Ontario). One of our owners went so far as to put his boat in the Toronto International Boat Show last winter created a lot interest, but we need more enthusiasm from any and all sources. Ideas welcome." * We got a wonderful note from Rives Allen, to "Just say Thanks"! Said Rives, "Hello Johnstone family, I'm from Panama City, FL. I just wanted to say thank you for building the finest boats in the world. I have been sailing J-Boats all of my life, and would have it no other way. I am the proud owner of a J/29 masthead/ outboard called SUPER DUCK for the last 6 years. She was damaged in 1995 by Hurricane Opal. She was totaled, in fact. A good friend of my dad, Edsel (Duck) Davis rebuilt her and she is still hard to beat. I wanted to ask about the outboard chain plates and the non-overlapping headsail on the newer models. On the Gulf Coast winds are light to moderate, and the extra horsepower is helpful. I guess in someways I'm still a little old school. Thanks again for taking a "monster garage" boat (the J/24) to the top."
